Everything you need to know about Malaysia Jobs and Working in Malaysia

Hi there, Edwin here to talk about Malaysia Jobs and working in Malaysia with you.

The Malaysian Job market started booming since the recovery of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and there are no signs of slowing down with more foreign and domestic investments were brought in through various Government initiatives.

Based in a recent survey found that 53% of expats in Malaysia are from Europe, 17% are from Australia and 12% are from USA and almost half of them are working in Malaysia for 1 to 4 years.

Many multinational companies such as Intel, HP, Shell and many more large and well-known corporates have set up manufacturing plants and global shared service centres.

My personal friend, an expat currently living in Malaysia, had contemplated to pursue this career in Malaysia two years ago after visiting and staying here for a month. Her reason was there is no winter in this country! Crazy isn’t it? But imagine, sun bathing every weekend under the glorious sunshine at Langkawi Cenang Beach. Now I bet you are sold! Lol!

For your information, over the last half century, life expectancy of people living in Malaysia has increased from 50 to 75 years. Retirement age in Malaysia is 55 years old for private sectors and 60 years for public servants.

Malaysia Employment Income Taxes

The employment income for non-residents (unless you have stayed in Malaysia for more than 182 days during the assessment year) is taxed at 26% without any personal reliefs. However, you may claim rebates in respect of fees paid to the Government for the issuance of your employment work permit.

On the other hand resident tax payers pay income tax at graduated rates of 2% to 30% and are eligible for tax reliefs. Even if you did not stay for 182 days, there are other conditions where you can be treated as resident.

However you will not be taxed if you are employed for less than 60 days, receiving interest from banks and receiving tax exempt dividends. Only income sourced from Malaysia is taxes, which means if you are working in Singapore but living in Malaysia, you will not be taxed.

Wanna read more about taxes in Malaysia? There are a few decent books on our Malaysia Guide Books section, written by professional authors about Malaysia Income Tax and there are some books on Malaysia Real Estate property taxes as well.

All tax matters is under the purview of the Malaysia Inland Revenue Board .

Holidays and Annual Leave Days

Malaysia has 18 days of Public Holidays, not counting State Holidays which may account for 1 or 2 more. Malaysian companies often entitle 14 – 30 days of annual leave for its employees, depending on experience and rank. 14 days annual leave is the minimum as described by the Malaysian Labour Law.

Working Days and Working Hours in Malaysia

Generally, companies in Malaysia operate on a 5-day week, with Saturday and Sunday off. Working hours can range from 8.30 am to 9.30 am and ends at 4.30 pm to 6.00 pm.

Types of Jobs in Malaysia

Lower skilled and general workers are dominated by foreign workers from countries like Indonesia, Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Each of the nationalities have their own approved sectors they can work in. For example, an Indian foreign worker can work in a restaurant but not in a plantation and an Indonesian national is vice versa. Malaysia is in dire need for accountants, engineers (especially Oil and Gas) and doctors. Investment bankers get paid the most in the finance sector and the Oil Field and Gas Engineers are the highest paid among all. There is no doubt if you walk on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, you will stumble upon a foreign expatriate every 5 minutes.

Western white collar recruits also typically get better positions with a chance to manage more people and bigger budgets. You are just that far ahead and you may not realize it.
